House of Hummus and Ful-The Hummus and the Experience

Since the establishment of the state of Israel or even before, the one question that has everyone wondering is “Where is the best hummus in Tel Aviv?” There so many options to choose from, but I have to say, House of Hummus offers one of the most underrated plates of hummus you will find in the white city.

The House of Hummus is not a new addition to the thriving hummus community in Tel Aviv. Located on the busy street of Chashmonaim, which is filled with many outdoor recreation stores and various restaurants, House of Hummus offers a tasty plate of hummus for a quick breakfast or a nice lunch break. The menu includes many non-hummus local dishes such as Malawach, chicken breast schnitzel, and a breakfast omelet. Each dish is served with a small plate of hummus – no matter the order. Equally important: the place is clean, the prices are affordable and the atmosphere is excellent.

Now for the hummus, they offer a delicious plate of Masabacha for only 16 NIS while their best dish is known as “The Triple”. This dish is both attractive and affordable, with a fresh plate of hummus and ful, a generous order of fries, and five falafel balls.  This dish is served with a small bowl of chopped salad, pickle plate, and puffy and tasty bread. The one downside might be the service, despite the waiters repeated explanation that each dish takes time, service was slower them most hummus joints around Tel Aviv. Overall if you don’t mind the slow service but you’re looking for a fresh, tasty plate of hummus which is also kosher, you have come to the right place.

Shi Shi- A Modern Twist of Sushi

Screenshot_2015-11-08-08-17-38

For the past 10 years in Tel Aviv sushi has been the entire rave throughout the city. Recently, sushi has taken the back seat to new and exciting cuisine options. While these new culture foods have emerged, sushi has lost its cool.  Locals in Tel Aviv have become sushi snobs and have become bored. Following a trend started in New York, a new and modern twist on sushi has arrived, it’s called Shi-Shi.

Shi-Shi is located on the Corner of Ibn Gabirol and Naviim Street right across from London Minister. They provide an upbeat urban style with seating around a small indoor bar with outdoor wooden benches which meshes with the exciting and fast paced life of Tel Aviv. Concerning  the food, they offer different innovative variations of enlarged sushi. Each dish is based on rice with different filling and sauces that are fresh and will surprise you with their robust flavor.

So what is this dish? Shi-Shi is an even larger and healthier sushi. The dish itself is based on rice with differ choices of fillings with unique, flavorful sauces. Each large sushi roll is rolled to perfection with no dripping and can be eaten in place or take away.

Screenshot_2015-11-08-08-22-09

Shi-Shi comes in 10 different variations – filling of fish and seafood, chicken, tofu and vegetables or fruit. Each customer chooses from different spicy sauces and fillings which are wrapped in rice.  One of their best rolls (my favorite) is chipotle vinaigrette marinated salmon with miso sauce and mango, ginger, carrots, beets, green herbs, cucumber and mango salad with spicy peanuts. Another roll I recommend is the chicken based roll which includes chicken breast curry-aioli, pickled kohlrabi, red cabbage, lettuce and green onions. For those looking for vegetarian options try the wasabi aioli-sweet potato tempura which is cooked with a fried tofu sauce.

Aside from Shi-Shi, they offer a delicious dish which is served with a base of seafood or chicken served on chapatti with special sauces such as chimichurri, aioli-asian and wasabi. Other non-sushi options are Asian salad of glass noodles with chicken, salmon or tofu. For those looking unique beverages, they offer different specialty drinks such as ginger and lemon beverage and green tea.

Market- A Tasty and Healthy Option In The Heart Of Tel Aviv

Recently, healthy eating has taken over Tel Aviv.  The vast majority of cafes in and around Tel Aviv have started to offer more and more vegetarian and vegan options on their menu. One of the newest vegan restaurants in the center of Tel Aviv is called Market.

119108_800_600

Market opened their doors around a year ago and is located on King George Street. This friendly vegan restaurant offers delicious hot soups and a variety of stews. Each dish is made fresh and is geared to the vegetarian and vegan communities of Tel Aviv. It will bring you back memories of your mothers cooking when you were child.

Their menu is seasonal and with every new visit you will find a few new dishes on their menu according to the time of year. The staff is very friendly and helpful – particularly for those customers who aren’t used to the vegan selections.

11794554_897287497010515_2663764649585070852_o

We recommend ordering the Indian dish with rice (27 NIS ) – lentils and vegan curried sweet potato served on a plate of rice. This dish is absolutely delicious and will satisfy. Whether it’s the sauce, which tends to be spicy from the curry, or perhaps the rich coconut milk, with soft lentils and rice, we know the final product is amazing.

At Market you can’t go wrong with any dish – it’s both affordable and very tasty. For those visiting Market in the winter months, Market offers very tasty stews. In particular, I recommend the Moroccan Stew. This stew is served with tomato sauce and green beans. Their homemade couscous with vegetable soup is outstanding as well. Overall, Market has tasty, delicious, and healthy options at great prices.

Top 5 Burgers in Tel Aviv

In the past few years, Tel Aviv has become a mecca for lovers of fine food. People used to argue about who has the best hummus, but now, all the rage is who has the best burgers in town.  My list of the best burgers in town are listed below. The majority of the places are not cheap, but they are worth the extra cost. Each has made the list for a  specific reason.

The Best – Vitrina

הויטרינה-3

Not just a sausage place, now one of the best burgers in town.

Vitrina, which opened two years ago, has done the sausage a great service by restoring it’s lost honor and elevating it to gourmet status. Not many loyal customers are aware that Vitrina was originally meant to be a hamburger place. After months of urging by the owners father, who noticed that there were way too many hamburger places in Tel Aviv, owner Nati Menashe  finally listened to his father and devoted the restaurant and bar to sausages. Menashe has always honored his original vision of Vitrina by serving hamburgers as well, even when they weren’t on the menu. After noticing the success of his hamburger, Menashe made the hamburger a mainstay of the menu.

המבורגר-והציפס-המפורסם

With the hamburger now having a spot on the menu, it is identified only by the name “Butler”. When you take a look at the Butler, it might not look like anything special; however, looks can be deceiving.  Delivered on a first-rate bun, it embraces a thick patty (220 grams) made of smoked neck meat and a bit of roast beef and black pepper. Arugula is used in the place of romaine lettuce, the pickles are homemade and the onions are cooked perfectly. People may come for the sausages, but they stay for the hamburger.

During the peak hours of lunch and dinner, Vitrina tends to have a short line, but it is worth the wait. The staff is very hip and friendly and their service is top notch. The waiting time at most will be 10 minutes but, trust me, it is worth every second for this delicious burger.

What to order with your burger:   The fries are some of the best fries I have tasted. Called “50/50”, they are made with two different kinds of potatoes: half white and half sweet. Their amazing taste can be credited to the lemon zest and parsley toppings.

The New Comer- Gourmet 26 Burger

trop-bon

Gourmet 26 Burger is located in the upcoming trendy street of Mikveh Israel which is just west of Rothschild Street. Gourmet 26  Burger opened their doors almost over a year ago and recently has joined the best burger in Tel Aviv competition. The restaurant was opened by two new French immigrants from the south of France and they bring the famous French “blend” to the hamburgers here in Tel Aviv. The restaurants has a few chairs and tables outside, but inside, if you sit by the bar, there is a great view of the kitchen where you can see the cooks make their masterpieces up close. While indulging in your juicy hamburger, you will be listening to new music from artists which gives this place the perfect ambiance.

CAM00292

Unlike other Tel Aviv hamburger locations, Gourmet 26 doesn’t offer too many different types of hamburger for you to choose from. They offer three regular weekly burgers and one vegetarian burger. Forget all the other French style culinary burger options that came with the recent wave of French immigrants that caused the Tel Aviv beach area to be flooded with overpriced kosher food options. This is not the story here; each burger here is more sinful than the next. The meat is prepared on location, the fresh and tasty cheeses are imported from France, and all the sweet brioche buns are baked in a local pastry shop each morning. Their “Classic” burger is the standard option which is a classic beef burger with melted emmental cheese, bacon and fried onions. Alongside the “Classic” (NIS 55) you have the side dish option of fries or a small salad. In addition, one has the option of deciding between different sauces, including  blue cheese or Swiss raclette cheese. Even the vegetarian option, mozzarella cheese steak grilled with sundried tomatoes and pesto can also tickle the taste buds of a devoted carnivore. It hard to recommend any specific burger here but trust me any choice you make you won’t regret.

The Best Deal- The Diner

wpid-img_20141002_231342

The Diner, by Goocha, is located in the southern section of the food friendly street of Ibn Gabirol. The Diner is an American retro style diner that serves hamburgers, steaks, fish, sea food, desserts and alcohol. The prices on the menu are not the cheapest, but if you come between 16:00-19:00, prices are 33% off. By far, they offer the best burger deal in the city. From Sunday to Thursday, they offer all day 1+1 for their delicious and juicy hamburgers. Unlike other places around Tel Aviv that offer 1+1 deals, The Diner hamburgers are still some of the best burgers you will find in town. The restaurant has the feel of an American diner with a very helpful staff and full bar of tasty cocktails and many draft beers.

The Diner offers ten different kinds of hamburgers to choose from. Like most gourmet hamburger locations around the city,  their hamburgers are not kosher friendly. Each burger is made with fresh beef prepared on location and served with a fresh bun and different vegetables of choice. The only question you need to ask yourself which two delicious burgers I want to order. Some of the best burgers are the “Lots of Onions Burger”  which is a delicious burger served with fried onions and chili, and the “Brisket Burger” which is smoked brisket with a fried egg. Honestly you can’t go wrong with any of the burgers available at the Diner..

Best Dirty Burger- Ad Haetzem Express

d7aad79ed795d7a0d7949-1024x739

Ad HeZtem Express opened their doors in 2013, and since their opening of their two branches ( Ibn Gabirol and King George) they have been a local and tourist favorite for those seeking a delicious burger. What brings people back is both the juiciness of their burgers and the atmosphere. The atmosphere is like no other, you know immediately that you came to the right place if you love burgers. The staff tends to be young and sometimes not the most helpful, but they are overall friendly and if they make mistakes you usually get rewarded with free fries.

Unlike the trendy “gourmet burgers” that have taken over Tel Aviv in recent years, they offer more of a fast food style burger at an affordable price.  They offer three sizes of burgers, each patty is 120 grams but you have the option to order from one to three patties. If you are looking for a great deal, the 120 gram burger is only 25NIS. Each juicy burger is presented on a soft bun, lettuce, tomatoes and different sauces. You can order additional toppings for a small fee.

e1377853129970

Ad HeZtem Express offers different meal specials as well. Each of these meals come with a side of crispy french fries, fried to perfection, and unlimited soft drinks (this is the only restaurant I found in Tel Aviv that has fountain soda). They offer the 120 gram lunch meal at the cost of 42NIS. The 240 gram burger lunch meal costs 49NIS. Last, but not least, the biggest lunch meal, the 360 gram burger, costs 57 NIS. I recommend if you are hungry to get a meal, it will satisfy.

Best Kosher Burger- Magic Burger

10983279_10204261945899066_4303659160232704431_n

Magic Burger is located in the heart of the city right across the street from Rabin Square on Ibn Gabirol Street. Unlike the previous entries on the list, Magic Burger is kosher. The trend in Tel Aviv is that a lot of restaurants are going kosher, but it is happening slowly.  Even with this recent trend, kosher eaters in Tel Aviv have available tasty and quality burgers. The design of  the restaurant is very straight forward – it looks like a typical burger restaurant in the U.S. Their menu includes the typical options such as hamburgers, lamb burgers and chicken sandwiches.

1385558_10200656306194102_1093608276_n

Similar to most burger restaurants found in and  around the city, Magic Burger offer theirs burgers in the size of 200 grams (you can stack them together if you are in the mood for a larger burger). Each burger is served on a fresh hamburger bun with lettuce, tomatoes, onions and a side of potato slices. Their burgers are cooked to perfection which will bring you back for more. They offer different deals when you order a meal (which can be a bit spendy), but otherwise their burgers are very affordable. Unlike other Tel Aviv burger location, Magic Burger provides you the simple kosher burger experience you grew up on.

Ha’achim- A Great Lunch Deal and the First All You Can Eat Brunch in Tel Aviv

Until now, I have reviewed different restaurants in Tel Aviv according to their menus for both daytime and evening hours. In today’s post, I am highlighting Hachaim lunch menu and all it’s “all you can eat” brunch.  In addition, I am introducing my new rating for each restaurant. I will be rating from a 1-5 scale in the categories of price, atmosphere, service, and quality.

the-brothers-ha-achim

Ha’achim ( the brothers), is located in the very busy and restaurant friendly Ibn Gabirol street. The restaurant is a true Tel Avivan dining experience. The design of the venue is similar to other central Tel Aviv eateries, with a small bar and small inside seating area with a view of the chefs preparing the delicious orders. They have a large outside seating section which usually hosts large groups. We recommend you to make a reservation during lunch and dinner hours. The staff is extremely friendly and is quick on their feet during peak hours.

Ha’Achim is a gourmet shipudiya (meat restaurant), a mix between a vintage steakhouse and a modern Tel Aviv restaurant. Their menu offers great appetizers – we recommend the freshly made hummus, tubule, roasted eggplant and lentils. They offer a starters deal where you get 5 starters for 59NIS. I recommend you order this if you are with a large group.

IMG_20150313_192521

The entrée menu includes varied meat dishes such as their tasty steaks, baby back ribs, kebab, sausages and their delicious hamburgers. I recommend ordering their version of the Israeli hamburger. Trust me – don’t order the Salmon skewers. I have made that mistake before, as you will only get three small pieces of salmon with no side dishes for 39NIS.

Continuing onto their lunch specials, they offer well-priced specials Sundays through Thursday from 12PM-5PM. With the entrée special you will receive with your main course two starters and one side order of your choosing. The average price for this special is between 45NIS-55NIS. They also offer a skewer lunch special; you choose a skewer (baby chicken, chicken fillet, liver, and kebab), 2 starters and a side order for 49NIS. All their regular menu dishes are at a discounted price in the lunch hours as well.

During the past few months, they created a new concept to Tel Aviv, the “all you can eat brunch” during the weekend. On Fridays and Saturday between the hours of 9AM-12:45PM they offer “all you can eat” at a fixed price of 75NIS per person. The buffet brunch includes a large selection of various salads, omelets, vegetables, fruit platters, cheeses, breads, pastries, shakshuka and much more. Unfortunately, there is no bottomless morning cocktails option, but they do offer different cocktails, wine and hot cider for an additional charge.

Atmosphere- 4.8

El-Taco- A great Mexican meal under 50NIS

ben-kelmer-1-h-680x382

After the growing popularity of Mexican restaurants worldwide in the past five years, it’s about time that Mexican food has finally arrived in Tel Aviv.  If you enjoy breakfast tacos and margaritas under 50 NIS, this is the place for you. El-Taco, Tel Aviv’s first authentic Mexican food that features tacos, opened their doors a few months ago in the trendy Yirmiyahu area in old north Tel Aviv.

Tired of your typical Tel Aviv cafés and Israeli street food? You will be happy to hear that you have a new option with El-Taco. They offer many different kind of tacos and tortillas at the affordable price of under 50 NIS per person.

213754503

El Taco menu consists largely of tacos (corn flour tortillas or white flour, soft or crunchy) and Quesadilla (closed tortillas with cheese, aka “The Mexican toast”), filled with chicken, meat or vegetables.  The prices are very affordable – each Taco cost from 13NIS to 19NIS. They offer business lunch deals as well.

DSC_4573

For me, their better dishes are the Taco mushroom vegetarian which contains champagne and shiitake mushrooms with green onions (costing 13 NIS) and the Quesadilla, which is served with chicken and beef. Both are served with refried black beans  and mozzarella cheese. The chicken option costs 15NIS while the beef option is 19 shekel. In addition, a small plate of nachos is available for 14 NIS. If you are looking for a full meal, you will need to order multiply dishes.

To help wash down your Mexican meal, El Taco offers frozen lime margaritas for 15 NIS and San Miguel beer for 14 NIS.

While walking on busy Carlebach Street, one might experience overload with the many different food options available. For those seeking a healthier alternative, there is Oliver –  one of the fresh salad options located in the center of Tel Aviv.

Oliver, located in the heart of Carlebach street (a few minute walk from Habima), offer fresh and tasty healthy salads and sandwiches. Vanessa, the owner of Oliver, opened the thriving salad bar over 8 years ago. Vanessa is originally from South Africa,  so ordering in English is not an issue.

Upon arrival at Oliver, from the hours of 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. there is be a constant line. Don’t be concerned, as  the line moves rather  quickly. The staff is very friendly and works at a very quick pace. Even during their busier times, the staff makes each customer’s as it’s their very own. All the vegetables are delivered every morning and are very fresh. Almost every vegetable imaginable is available at Oliver. In addition, they offer various cheeses, nuts, tuna, quinoa and many different dressings. I recommend adding quinoa to your salad as it goes perfectly with tehina dressing. Oliver also offers fresh sandwiches – tuna, hardboiled egg, omelet and many of the types of cheeses that they offer

IMG_20150112_095832

The best times to arrive at Oliver to order your salad without waiting  is before 12p.m. and after 2pm. You have the option of faxing your order – which takes around 30 minutes from order to completion. They recommend calling 10 minutes before arrival to confirm that the order is ready.
